As written by the Clash in 1981, the song Should I Stay or Should I Go simply states the indecision that comes for some of us when we are contemplating ending a relationship. Putting the responsibility on the other person, leaving it for them to decide your fate, is how we give our power away.
Recently, I experienced this very thing in a work relationship that I should have left a long time ago, but didn’t. Passive aggressively, I caused the relationship to end, but ultimately it was not 100% my choosing. When the decision is made for us, it doesn’t necessarily feel good.
Here’s a great quote from the incredible Suze Orman:
Lets face it: If you stay on for the wrong reasons, your eventual exit may likely not be on your own terms.
So yes, if you go there will be trouble, but trouble of YOUR choice. If you stay, eventually, the trouble is really amplified, especially if you aren’t prepared for it.
So should you stay or should you go?
The answer may not always be simple, but really, really, what’s your gut telling you?
